Cortez Police Officers enjoy the privilege of having 
"take home" patrol cars. Each Officer is assigned a car and 
keeps it until the car is retired. Short of having on-board
computers, all patrol cars are fitted with up-to-date
equipment. All Officers are in "solo" cars. The Police
Department has various vehicles to complete various tasks,
from Crown Vic's and Caprice's to a Camero, Jeep and Tahoe.

This natural stone slab memorial is located in front of the Dale Claxton Police Building. This Memorial was erected and dedicated on National Police Week in May of 1999. This memorial lists the names of local Police Officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty, dating back to 1935.

Old Patches

These patches were worn by Cortez Police Officers in years past, most recently from left to right. I do not personally know the dates of use but will post any information I come across.  We are attempting to locate other "artifacts" of the Cortez Police Department to share with our community. Please contact us if you know the whereabouts of any old patches, photographs or other items of interest, we would like to share them.

Sergeant Sue Betts recently told me about her first patrol car
for the city of Cortez, a Dodge Volare'.  Sgt. Betts said it wouldn't go, wouldn't stop, would overheat, would die and rode like a boat all the way up to 85 mph.. Even with all these luxuries, Sgt. Betts still liked this car because it was all hers.
Now I need to get an old photo of the Chief's Rambler.

The blue stripe was a modern design at the time.

This is a photo of Officer Brent Powell a few years back (back in the Dodge Volare' days). Officer Powell has been with the Cortez Police Department for 22 years. if you need to know about someone, ask Brent.
